The Eridu Genesis

Hello All,

I am sorry I wasn’t able to write much lately, I have been swamped with work for my third book and the e-mag. The e-mag is up an running: www.the-unseen.com and my third book is scheduled to be released at the end of Summer 2011—for those who want to know.

During my research I came across some very interesting stuff concerning the first known city of civilization, Eridu, and its very peculiar and familiar account of Genesis dated more than seven thousand years ago.

The Eridu Genesis, in Mesopotamian religious literature, ancient Sumerian epic, primarily concerned itself with the creation of the world, the building of cities, and the flood. According to the epic, after the universe was created out of the primeval sea and the gods were born, the deities fashioned man from clay to cultivate the ground, care for flocks, and perpetuate the worship of the gods.

Cities were soon built and kingship was instituted on earth. For some reason, however, the gods determined to destroy mankind with a flood. Enki (Akkadian: Ea), who did not agree with the decree, revealed it to Ziusudra (Utnapishtim), a man well known for his humility and obedience. Ziusudra did as Enki commanded him and built a huge boat, in which he successfully rode out the flood. Afterward, he prostrated himself before the gods An (Anu) and Enlil, and, as a reward for living a godly life, Ziusudra was given immortality.

This account was later taken by the first great city of civilization, Uruk, as its own and gave birth to the Epic Tale of Gilgamesh.

Fantasy and Science Fiction genre to become one and the same?

In reviewing some basic terms that we all take for granted, I came upon reading about the differences between the Fantasy and Science Fiction genre, beside the obvious temporal setting, since they are always filed under the same category. Fantasy is defined as a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting as opposed to innovative sciences in Science Fiction in that it does not provide a logical, or pseudo logical, explanation for the scientifically impossible events that occur. However, there is a great deal of overlap between the two as both are subgenres of speculative fiction. It would be good to recall that the modern view of magic is that it is a result of a universal sympathy within the universe, where if something is done here a result happens somewhere else, and/or a collaboration with spirits that cause the effect. On the matter of logic, it is the study of arguments. An argument is a set of one or more meaningful declarative sentences known as the premises along with another meaningful declarative sentence known as the conclusion. Each premise and the conclusion can only be true or false. One can thus understand that the Fantasy genre cannot be based on logical explanation as opposed to Science-Fiction. However, with the new theories in science such as the Quantum theory and the String theory where the traditional True or False principle no longer really applies, one can only wonder if the Fantasy and Science Fiction genre will not become one in the near future where magic, the resulting of something happening somewhere else when something is done here by spiritual [1] means, would not simply become a science in itself as it was once believed to be. [2][3]

[1] Metaphysical definition: An incorporeal but ubiquitous, non-quantifiable substance or energy present individually in all living things. One might more properly name it “life” (bios in Greek) or “aether” rather than “spirit” (pneuma in Greek).
[2] In regards to explaining Quantum Mechanics and String Theory, I would like to quote Richard Feynman: “I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.” And since String theory is a developing theory in particle physics that attempts to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity—where we are talking of 11 dimensional space!—it would be safe to logically conclude the same about String theory.

The Brethren of Purity

I was researching influential secret societies of their time, beside the obvious ones, when I stumbled into the Brethren of Purity, a secret coterie of mystics that developed the Encyclopedia of the Brethren of Purity during the mid Tenth Century in Basra, Iraq. Their epistles, 52 of them, treated of mathematics, natural sciences, psychical sciences and theology. They were inspired in parts by scholars of Greek, ancient Indian and Persian thoughts while incorporating scriptures of the Abrahamic tradition, the Torah of Judaism and the Canonical Gospels of Christianity. This behavior alone was odd for the time, however, the ideas, sciences, this elusive coterie propagated were what made it so particular. Indeed, the Brethren of Purity were very avant-gardiste for their time and their work not only helped shape medieval Islam but also Western culture. Scholars believe that one of the many ways this was done was through the learned Jewish of Spain during the twelfth century who studied and used the epistles of the Brethren of Purity in the propagation of knowledge in Western Europe. The work of the Brethren of Purity was such that the secret society was classified as an early form of freemasonry by the West, and as a group of “free thinkers” by some scholars of the East. The influence however of the Encyclopedia of the Brethren of Purity does not end there. The views expressed in their epistles were so modern that many believe they inspired some of the greatest thinkers of our time. An example of such work is their view on evolution which is believed to have had an influence on Charles Darwin and his inception of Darwinism since English translations of the Encyclopedia of the Brethren of Purity were available from 1812:

“[These books] state that God first created matter and invested it with energy for development. Matter, therefore, adopted the form of vapour which assumed the shape of water in due time. The next stage of development was mineral life. Different kinds of stones developed in course of time. Their highest form being mirjan (coral). It is a stone which has in it branches like those of a tree. After mineral life evolves vegetation. The evolution of vegetation culminates with a tree which bears the qualities of an animal. This is the date-palm. It has male and female genders. It does not wither if all its branches are chopped but it dies when the head is cut off. The date-palm is therefore considered the highest among the trees and resembles the lowest among animals. Then is born the lowest of animals. It evolves into an ape. This is not the statement of Darwin, this is precisely what is written in the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity. Ape then evolved into a lower kind of a barbarian man. He then became a superior human being. Man then becomes a saint, a prophet. He then evolves into a higher stage and becomes an angel. The one higher to angels is indeed none but God. Everything begins from Him and everything returns to Him.”[1]

There is currently an undergoing project by the Oxford University in collaboration with the Institute of Ismaili Studies to publish a Critical Study in English of the Arabic Epistles of the Brethren of Purity. The first remarkable books of the serie can be found here.
